Youtube video of the _______ (13/14) [Mar. 16th, 2009|09:20 pm]
I may be the last person on the internet to see this, and if I am, please forgive me. Regardless, I laughed my ass off, so I had to put it here.

P.S. I'm still alive.

Youtube video of the ____ (11/14) [Jul. 10th, 2008|08:53 pm]
Thank you everyone who wished me happy birthday yesterday. It was a good one - mostly mellow. We spent most of it relaxing at home.

This video was encoded for Youtube in a way that the length is listed at 10:58 although the video is much shorter. The trailer ends at 2:40. Because of the encoding the video tends to pause frequently if you watch it before it loads completely, so I recommend waiting to watch it until it is fully loaded. It will be well worth it.

More info here, but watch the video first )

Some of you know Hard 'N Phirm, a comedy music duo based out of Los Angeles composed of Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman. I was fortunate to be able to see them a couple of times at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater, and they put on a good show both times. One of their most famous works is Pi, and one of my favorites is Rodeohead. For today, here is one a little more obscure but just as enriching. It is the tender Spanish ballad:

This politician had a lot of support for the battle at the beginning, but as time progressed, a lot of support fell away, including some of the previous core. Now, despite many calls to end the campaign as debt increases and evidence of a successful accomplishment of the mission diminishes, this politician pledges to see it out until the bitter end. This person stubbornly intends to stay the course far beyond what may be the usefulness of the endeavor.

Question: Which politician and event does this represent?

  1. George W. Bush, the Iraq War

  2. Hillary Clinton, the 2008 Presidential Campaign

Youtube video of the (not quite) day (8/14) [May. 16th, 2008|07:07 am]

I've been slipping and not quite posting every day. Well, sometimes that happens. Claire and I got the house. We're excited, but it feels almost like there's an insurmountable of things to do before we move in. People move all the time, though, so we'll get it done. I'm still in a daze.

So instead of a Youtube video, today I have a link to a flash animation. Someone has copied the animation and posted it to Youtube, but the result is edited and some of the comic timing is off. Or I could feel that way since I've seen the original so many times that any alteration feels wrong.

I would love to read this book and give a report like this:

How to Kill a Mockingbird

Today I have for you a trio of short films by Don Hertzfeldt. Rejected is his most well known work as it played in quite a few festivals in 2000-2001 and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2001 for Best Animated Short Film.

I have a special memory of all three because I saw them for the first time at Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation with G'pa and Fatboy. If you ever get a chance to see any of Hertzfeldt's work on the big screen, definitely do so; that is where they are meant to be seen. More information on these films is available at the Bitter Films website.

With great pleasure, here are

Rejected

Billy's Balloon

Ah, L'Amour

Tomorrow I promise to have fewer than three videos.

Youtube video of the day (3/14) [May. 8th, 2008|09:50 pm]
The day has been full, and I haven't had a chance to update until now, but here it is.

The comic strip Garfield has been the subject of many revisionist and deconstructionist storytellers lately. Some notable examples include the Garfield Randomizer (URL subject to change), which as the name suggests, takes panels from random Garfield comics; in the forums at truthandbeautybombs.com, in which the artist removes Garfield's thought balloons; and Garfield minus Garfield, which removes Garfield entirely from the strips.

Each of these brings new life into the strip which ranges from the absurd to the depressing, and in many cases makes for a much stronger story. If you haven't seen these, I suggest that you take some time and get to know them. Preferably company time, if possible.

But they are static, and it would help if the cartoons could be presented in a method which doesn't involve all that arduous clicking of the mouse. Fortunately there is a solution in convenient lower resolution moving picture form, and it is

Garfield without Garfield

Additionally, a brave soul has taken the idea and further applied it to the Garfield Christmas special. It is the haunting tale of

An Arbuckle Christmas

It's the second day, and I'm already breaking the mold for the series by having multiple videos. . .

Saul Bass was an influential graphic designer, probably best known for his work in film. His distinct style can be seen, for instance, in the title sequences of Anatomy of a Murder, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and in the ending credits to West Side Story. The modern look and feel of his work was used by others, and now it has acquired a sort of retro-mod look to present audiences as evidenced by the style-homage in the credits of Catch Me If You Can.

Of course, the question arises, what if Saul Bass had worked on more films? In honor of [info]designjunky and [info]sanikleen, here is

Star Wars vs. Saul Bass

It may be a weakness of mine, but on the Star Wars theme I have to include one of the best Star Wars fan films ever made, even though most everyone who is reading this has seen it:

If anyone ever heard about www.myboot.com and liked the stories and the unfinished book, "She Hates My Futon," but were saddened that the site disappeared quite a while ago, there is good news. Craig Mitchell is back. He's got a new site at www.famousboot.com.

In other news, school is almost over. I've given my finals, and all that's left is some grading. Hopefully I won't have a semester as stressful again.
